Now, I don’t know whether Larry Scott was a candidate for the tight end’s coach at FSU or not. I do know that his resume is impressive and that he was just hired to coach tight ends for Miami.
Is this a coup for Al Golden? Scott has ascended the coaching ranks at USF quite nicely. He also was retained by Willie Taggart. It’s not immediately clear whether Scott interviewed with FSU. If you compare his resume to Billy Napier’s, it isn’t quite the same. Napier was offensive coordinator at Clemson. Napier also seems to be an ace recruiter.
While writing this post, I had an interesting thought. Aside from Pruitt, the other coaches Jimbo hired basically took “demotions” to come here. Sanders was an OC. Napier was an OC. Sunseri as a DC. Kelly was a DC. Yes, I realize some of those coaches were fired from their previous post, but Jimbo seems to be targeting the best coaching talent he can find — and doesn’t necessarily seem to be risking too much on up-and-comers. It’s clear Jimbo wants established coaches on his staff, which from a checks and balances standpoint, is outstanding.
I’m not particularly nervous about Jimbo’s hires — he has done an absolutely amazing job building a staff — but spring practice isn’t far away.
